About Us

Our aims are to inform, educate and campaign on behalf of older people in Portsmouth to ensure we have a voice in decisions made by our local council and Government

Portsmouth Pensioners’ Association was founded in 1991. The late Bill Webster had the idea and Alan Burnett and Syd Rapson were involved in its establishment. Arch and Muriel Deacon, Nell and Roger Leaver amongst others provided the early leadership.

The Association campaigns to get changes at local and national level, working closely with Portsmouth City Council, to have a voice in matters that affect members, particularly Care Services, Pensions and Health and Wellbeing. There are regular campaigning stalls throughout the City and feedback via open letters and petitions are sent to those in power to show how concerning many of these issues are for those who live in the City.

Other issues tackled include bus services and passes, safer streets, as well as campaigns against the payment of TV licences and support for WASPI.

The Association sends out a regular monthly e-newsletters with details of social events – the Knit and Mix group, the bus pass travel group and dinner club as well as social events, particularly the Christmas dinner.

If you are not on e-mail, we publish our free, bi-annual magazine The Voice which is distributed to libraries, shops and community centres throughout the city.

Go to the magazine section for further details if you want to contribute or to advertise with us.

Members meet on the first Monday of each month at Portsmouth Guildhall to discuss issues that impact them and speakers are invited to give talks about issues that have been raised that are of interest

The Clinic in Ethiopia

Portsmouth Pensioners’ Association continues to stand up for older people locally, nationally and indeed internationally. We regularly send funds to keep a clinic for older people in Ethiopia, where there is no pension or NHS!

We are proud of our past record and confident of our future.

Want to join our Association? It costs £10 per annum.
